Polk County Jail Project
Polk County is developing a new jail that will alleviate a prisoner population that greatly exceeds the capacity of the two current County jail facilities. This jail will replace the Main Jail and Interim Jail, both located in downtown Des Moines. The Main Jail will continue to be used for booking and short-term holding pending transfer to the new jail.

Polk County voters approved a $68 million bond issue in March 2005.
